Meina is located on the Piedmont shore of Lake Maggiore, along the Simplon route that connects Milan to Switzerland.
Originally known as Madina, it has some interesting churches and manor houses in its territory.
It became the property of the Milanese archbishops along with the entire Vergante area just before the 1200’s, and was later a fief under the Visconti and the Borromeo families.

During the XVIII century, due to the rediscovery of the enchanting beauty of Lake Maggiore and the birth of the stately vacations’ fashion, a lot of prestigious residences were built, like Villa Faraggiana where is possible to visit the museum and the municipal botanical park.

Lake Maggiore or Verbano is a pre-Alpine lake of fluvioglacial origin, the second largest in Italy. Its name "Maggiore" derives from the fact that it is the largest of the lakes in the area, but in reality it is the second largest in Italy after Lake Garda. In the past it was joined to Lake Mergozzo, from which it was separated from the formation of the Plain of Fondotoce.

Its shores are shared between Switzerland and Italy (provinces of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Novara, Varese). The largest tributaries are the Ticino, the Maggia, the Toce (which receives the waters of Lake Orta and the Ossola valleys) and the Tresa (in turn emissary of Lake Lugano).
​
Between Stresa and Verbania there is the archipelago of the Borromean Islands: the Isola Madre (the largest in the basin), the Isola Bella and the Isola dei Pescatori. In Cannero Riviera, on the other hand, the three rocks emerged called the Castles of Cannero. The two Brissago Islands are located in Switzerland.
